It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, which means it's time for Acker night!!! For those who don't know about Acker night, it's an annual event to promote musical culture in the community and also to raise money for local youth performing arts programs. On top of being a fantastic cause, it affords all of us the opportunity to see our local musicians perform simultaneously all over town. Friday night from 5:30 until 8:30, over 100 downtown businesses open their doors to host bands and solo performers. This is without a doubt the biggest musical event of the year and I am very much looking forward to it. You can download a complete program for the night at Ackershowcase.com.
Last Saturday totally rocked. XTra Ticket, a Grateful Dead tribute band from Phoenix, performed at Lyzzard's Lounge and I once again want to thank Daniel for continuously booking these phenomenal musical acts. The place was packed, as the band has a large and loyal following, myself included. They are just a very accomplished group of musicians who manage to evoke memories of a bygone time. I will go see them every time they perform anywhere near here.
I would like to take a moment to thank everyone who approaches me every weekend to let me know that you read my column. It truly means the world to me to know that people actually take time out of their busy days to follow my inane ramblings. But more importantly, it absolutely makes my day when you all take the time to stop and introduce yourselves and share with me who you are. Even better, when you actually dance with me! And thank you to pretty boy Ryan for fulfilling your dance obligation to me. Sorry Wells, yours didn't really count, which means you still owe me.
And there will be plenty of opportunity for dancing once again this weekend. Friday night certainly doesn't end at 8:30 after Acker night. You are definitely going to want to head over to Lyzzard's Lounge, where one of my favorite Blues guitarists, Sir Harrison, will be rocking the stage along with Rich (barefoot) Neville on bass and the amazing Miss Janet, our favorite chick drummer. You don't want to miss this show.
In the mood for the raunchy antics of Llory McDonald and Combo Deluxe? Well, you're in luck, because they will grace the stage at the Jersey Lilly Saloon both Friday and Saturday night from 8 until midnight! A big thank you to Tommy and Joan; we love you for providing great entertainment every single weekend. I always love spending time on your dance floor.
Saturday night beginning at 9, FunkFrequency will perform their most awesome disco and funk tunes at Scotties, and they are definitely another favorite band of mine. They will make you dance, no matter what. Rounding out Saturday night is a rock band from Phoenix, Scorpion vs. Tarantula, who can be seen at The Drunken Lass from 8 o'clock on.
So put those dancing shoes on and be ready to rock and roll, do the hustle, shake your booty, and whatever else may come your way. See ya around...ciao!
